not always considering bolsonaro existed and was a tech bros wet dream
It’s a rare W, but a welcome one.
Eu isn’t doing shit tho. Twitter and meta do just fine here.
Hve you heard of GDPR? USB-C mandate? Right to repair?
Right to repair? Repair what? Surely not a new iphone.
Do you seriously think that meta cares for your personal data if youre European? No? Then how come they are allowed to operate?
The EU fined Meta multiple billions. You can always do more, but it’s a start
How is that a start if their services are still profitable and poisonous to every mind exposed to them?
dont let perfection stop progress
And the lawsuits keep pouring in.
The right to repair laws will take effect in (at the latest) July 30 2026.
Manufactures have until then to decide what to do. Maybe Apple will just straight pull out of EU or comply by then.
It’s a painfully slow process but better than not even trying like all other states on this planet.

Double entendre: “eu” means “me” in Portuguese
Nice
Makes sense for any country tondo this because as has become clear, it doesn’t matter if you’re a democracy or a dictatorship, if you are liking musk and face or not, X and meta can and will destabilize your country and once it happens, there is nothing you can do about it except banning the entire site, which will be an unpopular choice.
Musk especially has shown to be all about himself and he’ll just push whatever political right wing party to destabilize a country.
Fuck x, fuck Facebook
If countries don’t start taking modern warfare seriously everyone is going to end up in far right authoritarian regimes that won’t accept election results. Bolsonaro would love to come back and never leave.
Calling Twitter “X”??? One should not.
Common Brazil W
Did not expect Brazil to be the hero we need right now, but I’m here for it.
Brazil has at least some history of fighting against tech giant’s disrespect of regularions https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blocking_of_Twitter_in_Brazil
I wonder how much biased is this article (in the sense that it was written mostly by male US citizens).
Yeah and I wasn’t expecting that one either. Sounds like I should start to, though.
Lula be right more often than not. Oops I mean left.
It’s some high judge so I think they are independent from the government but I don’t know their system well.
I’m thankful for Sunshine for posting this. She’s a real one!
And I’m also thankful for those who have upvoted this post instead of some generic US politics one. Gives some very needed diversity to the front page.
Proceeds to bring up the US anyway
Giving 72h to reply on a Friday is a nice touch ;-)
“there is none”. Explained in 10 seconds. Happy weekend!

Is there any way to hide embedded images on lemmy?
These are pretty annoying.
Use Lynx browser, if that’s even still a thing?
EDIT: It is!
Always one of the first things I install with a new Arch Linux install! Not because it’s useful or anything, I’m not delusional, but because it’s hella cool
A modern use case: I like RSS in my terminal so I use newsboat but hate it opening firefox and swapping me out of the terminal when I want to read more. So I have it use lynx instead.
I also have a computer without a DE that can browse the web (lynx), look at pictures (JP2a), watch movies (I don’t recall the name of the program but it converts the video to ASCII), edit word docs (take your pick), and send email (mail).
I’ve always preferred w3m or links over lynx.
Never tried that, thanks for the suggestion
Links handles javascript better, though.
Maybe some specific frontend or mobile app.
as a PSA, before 🫵you post images on the internet, it’s important to put alt text whenever you can. Some people need screen readers to acess the web, and it can give context to help understand it. Give a good description, and if there’s text on it, include that in the alt text. Acessibility is important!
Meta’s anti-LGBT rules are closely knit to their ending the fact-checking: It is science denialism and linked to racism and vaccine skepticism.
Homosexuality and gender identity are not considered mental illnesses, Sex is not a binary, and Race is not connected to intelligence.
Bigots never liked science on these three, and now they use political power to impose their narrative.
Meta never moderated such discourse. Nor reddit nor twitter nor youtube. There was no censorship to end here. What this is, it is a free pass to punch down trans and gay people. It is incitement to violence, and Zuckerberg and Musk must go to the gallows for it.
Don’t get me started on the toxic harassment these platforms have allowed against African and Carribean reparation activists, how they have destroyed the lives of feminists, and how they have named all Palestinians terrorists.
At this point race realists and gender essentialists have ensured political and technological control of the narrative.
There is no room for debating sealioning trolls on this one. If they don’t understand the social dynamics against gender/sex/minorities at this moment, they are no better than brownshirts.
It is permabans and hooks and jabs all the way, for every single weird freak that backs this deranged hateful shit.

I agree. As a mod on LW myself I have to wonder how far the admin are willing to go to enforce such a policy. Are they really going to start removing mods for banning trolls and bigots‽
*Edit: oops, I got the posts mixed up. I thought this was the post about lemmy.world’s new policy on debating trolls instead of banning them.
based lula
Good. At least someone is saying something. More people and companies should voice their opinion.
According to the extrajudicial notice, this allows users to associate sexual identity to “a mental illness or abnormality” and allows “the defense of professional limitations based on gender.”
Why does anyone associate with this site. It’s beyond me.
I feel like it’s just boomers at this point
Facebook maybe, but I’m dumbfounded by how many people in my life are actively using Instagram.
Brazil gives Meta 72 hours to explain new fact-check policies>
Meta: we don’t have any
They do, tho. It’s community notes. If multiple people agree on a correction, especially if those people usually disagree with eachother, it becomes the note
“we hate gays”
Brazil’s based, now?
Enjoy it while it lasts. We like to immitate the US so in 2026 it’s very likely that we’ll elect a reactionary idiot again.
If you ban social media companies that don’t regulate their shit you won’t.
If we ban social media companies* we won’t.
Privately owned social media is a tool of media manipulation. You can change the weights of some inscrutable algorithm and boost exposure to political ideologies that you want while no one can truly make a case against you, “it’s just the algorithm” they say. There’s no scenario where they should be allowed to exist in a sovereign country.
How many bribes is Meta going to have to pay out?
Community note: Bribes are illegal and won’t be tolerated in sparkly clean Brazil.
