But… but Ublock origins!
Jewel of Open?
Is this xkcd?
Yup, xkcd #198 to be exact. “Perspective” is the name of the comic, and the text underneath is the title text.
Sorry, but I honestly don’t get it. I I were to point out the crown jewel of open source, it’s gcc. gcc is the backbone and survival condition for so much modern industry that it’s not even remotely funny.
Take away gcc, and the world will likely burn for a substantial amount of time until people start making in-house or proprietary alternatives.
I love ffmpeg
llvm exists. it might be a bit of effort if you’ve used too many proprietary gcc extensions, but for most things I don’t think it’s terrible to just switch between gcc and clang
What even are GCC’s advantages in 2024, besides “we painted ourselves in a corner with proprietary extensions” (e.g. Linux)? That aside I personally only see upsides to clang, but I don’t routinely do C work and maybe I’m missing something.
Well if you need something to work with Fortran…
Where Linux?
(I might be open to allowing all memes related to the F/LOSS world even if not directly related to Linux… but you’ll have to convince me.)
I interpreted “it” in the post title as referring to Linux. Firefox is “just a browser,” but Linux is not.
The comic states that Firefox is a crown jewel of open source, not the crown jewel.
That said, I agree that if I had to pick only one, it would definitely be Linux over Firefox.
Or is it? VSauce music kicks in
Uhum...
I will send you to Jesus! Grabs slipper
Ublock still works on chrome for me.
Works for now…
They have stated they will be slowly removing v2 extensions for users instead of removing them all at once. So, they just haven’t gotten to you yet. You will have to switch to use ublock lite, and it’s not as good.
Even if it does work for now, idk why you would want to support the company trying to get rid of necessary extensions and remove any sense of ownership of your own browser, like Google is doing.
Just switch to FireFox and get it over with already.
Still is the key word
Apparently, they’re currently in the process of turning people’s Manifest V2 extension off. They seem to be stretching it out over a few weeks to sidestep a shitstorm.
Afterwards, there will still be uBlock Origin Lite, but the dev didn’t choose that name for funsies. It will be even worse at ad blocking, and be missing some important features like automatic block list updates and the element picker.
I believe uBlock will continue to work, just not as well.
I see zero ads
oh okay it works for you, I guess the developer claiming it will not work as well on Chrome as on Firefox was complete BS 🤡
Not saying that. Just saying it still works. Sorry I’m offending Lemmy by saying something works on chrome but it does.
it only works for hiding ads, it is powerless to protect any of your privacy anymore. ublock origin is much more than an adblocker, but ubo lite is basically just google’s mockery
Not offending anyone, just unintentionally misrepresenting reality.
Not on android
There’s Firefox for Android and Ublock Origin works just fine. In my option it works better than the default browser.
How does that relate to my comment?
It doesn’t.
