So. What Am I getting banned?
Consequences for my actions?!
Someone needs to ban this MINOR right now before I call the cyber police. 😤
Are you really surprised about being banned after admitting to breaking the rules and then expressing intent to circumvent a ban?
young padawan, the first lesson you ever learn on the internet is never admit your age until it no longer matters
I’m calling the police.
Easy there, Karen.
Why would you ever admit your age online?
I’m as old as the max age for Legos
I’ve been celebrating the anniversary of my 40th birthday for years now…
Eh, I don’t really see an issue with it at my age, but I guess for younger people it could be bad. I’m in my 40s now, but aside from producing some data to be mined, I don’t see how people knowing that hurts me.
What Klient allows you to create tags for users?
Thunder also allows user tags. Highly recommend it.
Voyager
This looks like Voyager
but it might be an instance setting.
Edit: it is an experimental setting in voyager.Absolutely accurate tag
I’m not 23. Nobody likes you when you’re 23.
You should act your age
What’s my age, again?
It is 26 years old. That is a quarter of a century. Just like a 1975 song was called an “oldie” in 2000, it’s fair to call this an oldie now.
Edit: “What’s my age again” is closer to ABBA’s “Waterloo” than it is to today.
Oh no
I like how knowing all these lyrics will convince people that all of you are older than 23.
And you still act like you’re in freshman year
They only want you when you’re 17, when you’re 21 you’re no fun.
23yr old women are quite popular.
Quite
I’m 92.
If 16 is too young for Lemmy, 92 is unfortunately too old.
I’m sorry, but if you can’t use it during the first 17 years of your life, you shouldn’t be allowed to use it during the last 17 years either!!!11 Rules are rules…
Oh, ok. I’ll be sure to stop using when I’m 134 years old. Just to rule out the last 17 years.
Hi 92, nice to meet you. How old ya
I got that guy tagged as a mushroom, beware.
Uh oh!
That doesn’t make sense. Iirc, lemmy.world doesn’t host any of your content or manages your account, it simply just displays it.
This can get a bit complicated with federation. This community is hosted on LW. I am accessing it via sopuli.xyz, and you via feddit.uk. All (presumably) have full bidirectional federation with each other.
When I hit send, this message will go to Sopuli’s outbox, which will then sync to LW for this community. At that point, this post will live on LW’s servers. Anyone accessing LW directly can see it, even if Sopuli were to go down. Later (probably less than a minute), LW will sync to Feddit.uk, at which point you will be able to see it.
Note that this is for text posts only. There have been some changes around images and video, both for bandwidth and liability reasons.
Imageine this, but with email.
This just hit me.
How long until governments create email accounts or digital identities (I mean they already have the latter). Then they force social media platforms (who n turn force users) to use/link that as age verification and content blocking.
Hell back when I was banging it didn’t matter, but they did ask, so we thought it did matter and we all lied. I think my ol’ AIM acct thinks I’m like 85 now.
According to my google account I’m 55 years old.
This meme could have been an email!
Kit comes across like a dickhead from that screenshot.
An arrogant teenager?!?
I don’t know them to judge them. I can only just the interaction and there’s not even context for that. They could be a perfectly nice adult.
Oh, it’s “Kit”, not “kid”.
Dismiss my comment.
Haha, no worries. It’s an easy mistake to make.
is this like traveling to another country where the drinking age is lower
No, it’s like a 19 year old being on a conference call with Americans having a beer and Americans telling him he can’t because in America the law is 21
Why is Kit on instance X gatekeeping a user in instance Y from accessing a community on instance Z?
Gives me vibes of old man yelling at kids to stop having fun.
This particular thread is hosted on lemmy.world and you must be 18+ to access it.
Nah, admins only care about their own instance. So a LW admin would only care about underage LW users.
Admins don’t have the time to moderate for other instances. I’m already busy enough with dbzer0, lemm.ee’s business is theirs. (as long as they’re not posting CSAM or scams)
Yeah, I’m assuming this is in place to comply with the stupid UK age verification laws anyway. They don’t want to enforce an age restriction, but they’re forced to for their users. They don’t care about users on other instances. That’s not their problem.
And despite how simple it is people still find new and interesting ways to be bigoted. It’s impressive really
As long as all those people getting banned were actually for those reasons…
Most of the time admins and mods just ban you because they don’t like you even though that’s not a rule.
if you’re speaking from experience, find the modlog and post to !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com
I did, thread was brigaded by blahaj users who get dopamine from attaking lgbtq people who question literally anything.
What makes you think it’s most of the time?
Because admins and mods on Lemmy are known for doing this.
For .world everyone gets banned for “rule 2”, in .blahaj it’s “gatekeeping”
Are they known for this? News to me. Where are you getting this notion? Again you said “most,” which is a pretty extraordinary claim.
Blahaj is also one of the most welcoming, warm communities I’ve ever seen. If you get banned from there you deserve it IME. They are a major space for LGBT Americans in particular. They don’t suffer bigotry 🤷♂️
Please no shrug emoji or I am gonna burst like overgrilled sausage and sacrifice a newborn for each one 🤷♀️
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Get over it
lemm.ee allow 16+ year old users.
I believe the most an admin can do is block you from their own instance (e.g. lemmy.world banning you from lemmy.world communities), they don’t own your account on lemm.ee so they can’t ban your account from accessing the comms they don’t control, and lemm.ee has no reason to ban you.
Tagging @fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com
Yep, i have no power outside my instance. However sag has been banned by the LW admins :(
There’s a YPTB post about it, you can chime in. It’s outrageous honestly, sag is a very good poster/user, maybe they can be pressured into reversing the ban.
Ah thanks.
YPTB
What’s this?ah just remembered, /c/ YePowerTrippinBastards
Should be fine, then. You’re on .ee not .world, they’re not going to vet your account for age ;)
edit: I should mention that you still have to follow the COCs of instances, but most of them can be boiled down to: Don’t be a huge dick, and don’t be racist/anything-phobic.
Don’t be a huge dick, and don’t be racist/anything-phobic.
I leaved Reddit because of this. And I choose Lemmy over other Social Media app to ignore this. I can safely say I am not. I don’t even joke about it like some edgy teenager thinking saying N-Word is fucking cool or saying Hitler was a good person and everyone should do it too. Or Hating LGBTQ person.
You’re a cool poster
I cannot stress this strongly enough: You have not been “using Lemmy” for 1.5 years now. “Lemmy” isn’t a service the same way Reddit is, it’s a web engine, like Joomla, or like phpBB.
You’ve been using lemm.ee for 1.5 years.
Nobody wants to hear this, but there’s no “Lemmy”. This emergent network of social media sites isn’t a coherent thing, and it’s not a stable concept. The attempts to make this look like a singular space are to the ultimate detriment of the network, because implicitly lying to end users about what they’re doing informs how they behave.
You’ve been using lemm.ee. Lemm.ee has copies of content on other websites, but those websites have different rules, and different expectations than lemm.ee. You don’t get to pretend otherwise because of where you’re reading the content, and there is no guarantee that you will have further access to content from any other website than lemm.ee.
This is a reality that people simply do not want to face, for some reason. Everyone wants to imagine that federation is just centralized social media with some voodoo in the background, but it is a fundamentally different paradigm, and this is the wild fucking west.
You’re going to get your toes stepped on if you treat it like something it’s not.
Why would you type all this out? What a waste of your time yapping about nothing. It’s Lemmy, for better or worse
The social media lemm.ee runs the software Lemmy and forms part, along side other social media (server/instances/providers) of the Lemmy network that simultaneously forms part of the Fediverse.
OP and you too are on Lemmy because you are part of servers that run Lemmy, and that actively make part of the Lemmy network in all its aspects, up to its distinct userbase culture that differentiate it not only from the wider fediverse but also from other link aggregators like Mbin and PieFed.
Not only is your comment painfully pedantic but also patently wrong.
they have been using the lemmy software.
You realize the software most of us here use is literally called Lemmy, right?
No, lemm.ee and Lemmy.world are using the Lemmy software. You are using a web browser or a mobile app which is decidedly not Lemmy
Wow, you’re that kind of troll. Okay, enjoy your day and happy trolling!
I’m not trying to be a troll. I’m not even trying to be pedantic. I just agree with the guy a couple comments up that we should refer to the thread based fediverse as “Lemmy”. There is piefed, mbin, and even the microblog based AP platforms can ingest content from threadiverse.
If we refer to the threadiverse as just “Lemmy” then the network is going to be known as a place for tech obsessed socialists rather than being part of the wider AP network
Sure, the Fediverse is not Lemmy. But I’m using Lemmy. I also use Mastodon. Both are vastly different experiences despite being based on the same protocol.
Let me check my email
YoU mEAn YouR gMaiL.COm??
When people say they are sending emails, do you also ask them which email provider they use to correct them?
If you email someone on a different mail service and your message breaks the ToS of their mail service then you shouldn’t be surprised if your email address gets blacklisted.
Different providers have different spamfilters, different rules regarding html mails, attachment file size, use of tls, policies regarding exspired certificates, and might have different log in procedures, so yes, if there are problems the question which providers are involved.
If an admin put limitations to who can or can’t belong and/or interact with their server, it’s their responsibility to whitelist and blacklist accordingly.
I seem to be missing some context - anyone want to fill in the rest of the class?
Edit: the image being shown to lemmy users is not being shown to mbin users, so here it is for those like me: https://imgur.com/q4zuZzz
Must be your instance. I can see it fine from kbin.melroy.org.
Well, now that’s just discrimination :(
Weird though!
Edit: it also doesn’t show for kbin.earth (which is running mbin) - I’m curious what the source of the problem is for this strange and seemingly-arbitrary minority of users https://kbin.earth/m/fediverse@lemmy.world/t/1028068/So-after-using-Lemmy-for-1-5-Years-You-are-telling#comments
why do mbin links always break on lemmy?
hmm, is it possible that maybe both of those mbin instances blocks imgur? I have accounts on both but I’m using fedia as my main
if this keeps up I might just abandon mbin and go with Lemmy while waiting for piefed lol…
Seems like there are other Imgur submissions on Fedia that mostly work fine (no thumbnail, but the image itself shows up if you click on the expando thing in the UI) https://fedia.io/d/imgur.com
I did notice that at some point around the time of my second comment Imgur was having some issues (I was given a JSON file instead of a webpage or image when I found and clicked on the image that OP submitted), so maybe fedia and a few other instances just got unlucky with the timing?
If you notice it becoming a recurring problem you can report it on Fedia’s meta magazine/community: !fedia@fedia.io
sure, I’ll try to keep an eye out for problems.
