Google literally holds all the cards and has what, only Europe to worry about in terms of regulatory backlash.
Gosh I hope the non-Android fork open source OSs get some money from phone makers because they will definitely have a market when a few other options become truly viable.
You can write the EU to urge them to act. They are monitoring the situation. That we have to say pretty please to a huge soulless corporation based in a hostile, fascist nation to not take our freedom away is so fucked up.
At this point steamos/linux ported to phones and waydroid for a compatibility layer is our only hope
PostmarketOS likes to talk to you
Yeah that would be ideal but you know manufacturers they want a company attached to it just like how Linux distros are right there but it took steam deck for them to show interest.
I wish google would stop being evil
Google has no incentive to walk back, especially given what they saw Apple has been able to get away with on their end. And as we’ve seen with Android forks, device tree information, restricted bootloaders, they are making it increasingly hard for Android to be an OS that can be forked and installed on devices.
The community ought to prepare for the realities of this, and put mitigation measures in place. GNU/Linux is the next best truly open/free-as-in-freedom experiences. Waydroid/ATL can act as temporary bridges for both developers and users alike while native binaries are ported.
If you’re making apps, target to develop qt/qml rust apps so it can run on WearOS equivalent AsteroidOS watches, while being able to scale to other larger screen sizes under a single codebase
