okay THIS WAS A BLAST thank you for all the questions! i am so sorry i couldn’t answer every single one i have to run to set now but feel free to dm me on IG @team_karim if you want to ask me anything else and i’ll try my best to answer!! 🖖
To be clear, this is for 4pm EST
30 more minutes! God I’m excited!
+24 hours. But you can still be excited!
Oh well. Guess I gotta be patient. Thanks for the heads up!
We wanted to make sure there was lots of time to accumulate questions, but the Fediverse is unsurprisingly rising to the occasion.
This sparks joy in me!
aww well this is kind, haha thank you for your enthusiasm!! i really appreciate it
Omg he responded to me twice! ☺️
Is that the UTC-0500 one?
Is that the UTC-0500 one?
lmao thanks for the reminder that there are four timezones which could be called “EST” 😭
(but UTC-5 is the only one properly called that)
I wish more people would use that format. It’s much easier to relate to your own time zone.
Depends… I grew up with TV stations advertising shows in Eastern/Pacific time zones while I lived in neither.
I’ve also driven to both of those time zones and can picture how many time zones away they are in my head.
Either one of those is easier for me.
There’s an entire world of timezones that aren’t the US.
It’s easier for you to remember your timezone in ± utc than making everyone else on the planet look up whatever the fuck est is every time we need to.
Well I don’t live in the US, so yeah I know. Anyway, my point is that “easier” is subjective and very much based on a person’s experience.
I’ve looked up UTC compared to my time many times and it just doesn’t stick. I don’t know what the current UTC time is but I could tell you what time it is in Newfoundland no problem. 🤷♂️
You don’t need to. Jesus christ.
UTC-3:30
That’s all you need to remember to be able to refer anyone else to your time zone to any other timezone on the planet.
Ok get mad about it, because that’s a reasonable response.
This is incredible, my respect and gratitude to those that are making it happen. Also can’t wait.
Over a million upvotes on this post!
Incredible engagement all.
Certainly an instance record but is that a Lemmy record? Are many of those upvotes coming via other APIs or is it just Lemmy’s
I have no idea where you’re seeing a million, I’m seeing 1,300. But that’s still very high for the fediverse! And it’s definitely the highest we’ve ever had in one of our local communities.
LOL — saw k, thought thousand, wrote million
What I get for posting after an IM, screen heavy workday.
Yes, a thousand is huge, even if an order of magnitude lower. 🖖🏼
Might as well had been a million, I don’t think it could have gone better! ❤️
Is this the thread for questions?
What actor from Trek’s past, that primarily wore lots of makeup and prosthetics, do you look up at as a acting role model?
This is the thread for questions!
Doug Jones!!
Action Saru!
Do the prosthetics make it much more difficult to act in, or does it actually help you get into the role?
What’s the Klingon food like on-set, for scenes where you have to actually eat it? Do they try and make it taste good, or is it as gross as it looks?
Hey Karim, I’m really enjoying Academy so far! Coming of age stories are part and parcel of the franchise since Wesley/Wil Wheaton, and I’m wondering: what’s your favourite coming of age story/film/show/game?
(The Breakfast Club is a very valid answer btw)
i love the edge of seventeen, eighth grade, and ladybird
How it feels to have all the Klingon makeup?
POWERFUL. everyone always stares at me and i get confused but then i realize its because i look REALLY cool especially in person with all the klingon makeup on lol
Hi Karim! really loving SFA, and Jay-Den is definitely an awesome character, the Trek world needs more Klingon scientists!!
Jay-Den’s voice is really great 🔥 fit for a warrior.
What’s your favorite Klingon phrase?!
thank you!
a warrior does not let a friend face danger alone.
Hello Karim, I am a Trekkie that hasn’t seen Starfleet Academy, but because you’re here, now I will watch it
I started watching because of the AMA. Jay-Den is a super interesting Klingon character, can recommend.
:) i hope you have the best time
I hope you like it. Personally, I’ve been enjoying it a lot. I have appreciated how it’s trying to do something different, whilst still having the core Star Trek core of having something to say.
I would strongly recommend any Trekkie watch at least as far as episode 4, which will probably end up being one of my favourite episodes of Star Trek. That episode also prominently features Karim, who absolutely steals the show.
In episode ‘2F09’, when Itchy plays Scratchy’s skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib twice in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a magic xylophone or something?
Let me ask you a question. Why would someone wearing a shirt that says “Genius At Work” spend all his time watching a childrens TV show?
The itchy and scratchy show is a pop culture staple. That being said, seasons 2-9 are when the show peaked. I gave up watching after season 17.
yes
Hi Karim. I’d like to know how long the casting process took. Best regards from mid Europe.
sent in my self tape, got a callback maybe 2 weeks later, met with producers, and then a few days later i had an offer. i accepted, and then i was on set within the next 2-3 months.
Wow, that’s incredibly fast. Thank you for your reply. :)
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions!
First growing up, were you a fan of Star Trek? Second, now that you’re part of it, what has it been like to join such a large and long-lasting franchise?
Much has been made about the expansive Starfleet Academy set, but have you done much location work so far? Are there any interesting places you can mention?
Starfleet academy has been rather divisive with fans and Star Trek fans as a whole have been known to be rather vocal.
Have you been paying attention to any of the comments made about the show (positive or negative) and has any of this effected your mental health (positive or negative)?
Also wanted to add that I’m personally loving the show and Jay-Den has been a standout character for me.
There’s a strong tradition of griping about new Trek shows since TNG was announced. I hope the people working in them don’t let the criticism affect them.
DS9 especially got one of the absolute worst fan reactions at the start. Primarily over the fact it wasn’t set on a Starship with a story of the week layout. History has shown it to be one of, if not the, best shows in most people’s rankings however.
Trek fans are some of the worst to get early feedback from honestly. So many just have kneejerk reactions and are defensive for no reason.
i read A LOT of comments, im chronically online. my mental health right now is GREAT, i’m just happy people are talking tbh lol
What’s it been like to work with actors like HH & PG? Learned anything from them?
I can’t help but hear Disney’s Goofy’s laughter whenever I read IYKYK, which makes this even funnier.
SC plays my favorite SFA character… I played a game with my SO to see if she could spot him on the show. She cheated by accidentally seeing him in the credits after the first few episodes. Was fun while it lasted though.
lol. I was on mobile and lazy, thanks for keeping the naming format ;) I am embarrassed, I did not at all catch that it was TM when she was on screen.
First, I just wanted to say that you’re a treat to watch on Academy and I can’t wait to see where your story goes! It’s always great to see a species fleshed out in Trek, in this case a Klingon that has other pursuits than that of a warrior.
Were you initially intimidated by the fact that you are playing a character that is part of a species that has decades of culture built up to this point? If so, how did you prepare for the role? If not, I can’t tell because you’ve been great so far.
