KDE neon is really only a development platform, and it is barely maintained.

you can do exactly what you’re talking about, you just didnt bother to look it up. it is done the way it is because it is intuitive to organize things that way and it is a good way to make the actual organization of data on a storage device human readable. most people have no use for organizing things the way you are talking about 90% of the time, bit because usecases do exist where it is helpful it has always been possible to do that on linux. depending on the apps you use it may not be exposed graphically, but it can be done.

i think fedora is a pretty good distro. there are some things they need to work on (like their refusal to ship proprietary stuff how you’d expect and the existence of fedora flatpak) but overall I think they are a much better distro than they get credit for.

hopefully someone steps up, its a really good resource.

if you play Roblox (I do sometimes for nostalgia or to mess with some free nonsense with friends) sober is really good. it complains about Wayland but works perfectly.
my friends do shit like that all the time like you were just saying “windows does stupid thing” and all I said was “linux does this instead they should be doing that on windows” and immediately the neckbeard with fedora gifs start flying
theres a plasma window decoration called klassy that has a bunch of presets. all the windows-like presets are called defenestrated (followed by the number of whatever version of windows it is like).

you misunderstand (or more likely I phrased it like an idiot). im not saying something like that is easier to manage on fedora. what I meant was that you would encounter minor things on fedora that would give you the chance to learn the skills necessary to fix or at least diagnose a bigger issue. on mint you wouldn’t see that and on Ubuntu you generally wouldn’t either (in my brief experience using each before settling on fedora as my main)

IMO mint and Ubuntu make things simple in a way that keeps users from ever encountering something where they have to be aware of what the computer us doing. this means if something is happening that shouldn’t (malware, something misconfigured, steam being an asshole, etc.) they won’t know where to look. this is something windows and Mac do as well and it leads to the vast majority of people not knowing that they can make the software on their computer do what they say. if people dont know how to do that, corporations will (and do) take advantage of it. i probably am exaggerating a bit but I still think putting a new user on Ubuntu or mint is doing them a disservice.

I’d reccomend fedora. mint and Ubuntu will be simpler but its like giving a toddler a wheelchair instead of teaching them to walk. the few things they’ll have to learn are necessary anyway.

you dont need to fuck around with other distros either for the most part, you just can.

its really simple, use mint if you dont know what computers are, use fedora if you’re normal, and save specialty/hobby distros for specialty/hobby stuff.
ive tried several times and so far its worked zero lol
i thought I had to do it all manually. welp, time to boot up virtualbox.

well given that I’m american I dont have an issue supporting an American company (if you’re European, good job getting out from under our thumb. we have too much power) but I do want to support a more trustworthy company.

so mint on a better base and with a good de… I’ll have to look at it again

i dont have anything big enough to back up to. my system has 1.5 TB.

yeah ive heard about KDE Linux but its too early to use rn. hadn’t heard of microOS

might have to look at that
it probably does, but it isnt considered a ‘real’ distro since it isnt suitable for non-development use (nor is it meant to be). its a very common misconception about KDE neon to think that since it’s the KDE branded one it must be the best general-purpose KDE distro.
thats why they are making KDE Linux. KDE Linux is going to be what a lot of people mistakenly take neon to be while also fulfilling the role of ‘development standard implementation/example implementation for distros to reference’ much better.
