I think many people would agree with you. Not all.

Personally, I do think Puerto Rico is basically a colony in all but name. But I know people living in Puerto Rico now who disagree. And I tend to defer to the people actually living in The Place when it comes to discussions like this.

The Wikipedia article on the Puerto Rico statehood movement might also be interesting to you if you didn’t find it yourself already. Puerto Rico has had several referendums in recent years, on one of them:

the fourth referendum, held in November 2012, asked voters (1) whether they wanted to maintain the current political status of Puerto Rico and, if not, (2) which alternative status they prefer. Of the fifty-four percent (54.0%) who voted “No” on maintaining the status quo, 61.11% chose statehood, 33.34% chose free association, and 5.55% chose independence

  • TIL people with allergies are narcissists. Checks out.

    Ok, more serious response now:

I think how a person treats cats/pets can be an indication of how they treat others. Similar to watching how a date treats people working in restaurant and hospitality industries.

Even if a person dislikes cats, I expect them to not be assholes about it. Don’t pick on the cat. Don’t monologue on how awful they are. Realize their world doesn’t revolve around you and be ok with that.

  • A few dozen users, mostly bots or people posting in non-English with their accounts setup incorrectly to tag it as English.

Actual humans who I think are idiots or trolls, I’m more likely to just tag them instead of blocking them. I see the tag and it reminds me not to waste my time answering them, but I can still see other people making interesting responses. Like there’s a chronically depressed dude who posts frequently, asks for advice, then insults anyone who replies. He caught me twice, then I tagged him and I no longer take his bait. But some other people who reply to him have genuinely good comments and I can still see them.

  • It’s not just the $3.5k cost of a headset. There are recurring costs to maintain the headsets. Even larger than that is cost of converting existing work instructions into the virtual environment and maintaining them. Plus expect push back from some workers, possibly losing some to other companies. And if it’s a union shop, expect them to use the change as leverage in next negotiations.

I would absolutely require more money to strap a chunk of electronics to my face for 8+ hours a workday.

  • Airbus in Toulouse has one section of a production line where work instructions, tool tips, and prints are available to the mechanics on VR headset. There are surely other industries that are further along, but in aerospace, that Airbus line is goals. I’ve seen it in an open house / show off situation. I am still skeptical how mechanics use VR headsets for 8+ hour shifts day after day.

I’m sure they’re not as intense as video game VRs, those start giving me headache and nausea after about 45 minutes. 8+ hours seems like it would be a lot. And at 8+ hours, it’s not even just the vision/nausea, I have to assume it becomes a question about ergonomics of neck and shoulders supporting the extra weight.

  • Yeah, just “sigma” goes back to sigma male claptrap. But as with all internet memes, it evolved super rapidly and took on layers. “Sigma” started to mean just “the best”, not in reference to male hierarchy necessarily. Then there was a cartoon clip with Squidward from SpongeBob where he said “what the sigma” and it went viral.

Websearch “what the sigma meme” today and you will get text and video explanations of the meme for old folks like you and me. I prefer ones from teachers who interact with middle schoolers; our frontline troops facing the bleeding edge of internet memespeak.

  • I subscribe to the digital stream of radio stations through my podcast app. WFUV out of New York City, WXRV out of I don’t know where, some random station out of Sydney, Australia I stumbled on that has an EDM DJ on at the same time I’m waking up on the weekends.

I also have Spotify, but I tend to get better recommendations from real human DJs at radio stations.
