  • A quote attributed to a few people, Heinlein and Pournelle for two, “If you can get your ship into orbit, you’re halfway to anywhere.” Both space and planets have shared and their separate problems to solve. In my head I prefer the image of most populations moving into habitats in space, customized to their preferences, with smaller settlements on various bodies for their own purposes. In my realistic view I don’t see us getting that far before we get bogged down with all the problems we’ve created on this planet. The window to a permanent space civilization might have already shut. A sad thing, as a 70s kid I grew up convinced we were full speed into some version of what scifi had sold to me.

  • From the article and then reading the wiki on Miranda, it seems that the moon used to be in an irregular orbit which would magnify the tidal stresses, but is not anymore, so it was presumed there was refreezing as the heat reduced. But with this paper perhaps not yet enough freezing far enough down to make the ice break as expected for a solid layer. I would guess that from the point of reaching any water below, Miranda’s layer will be far more difficult than ones like Europa and Enceladus, or at least until we learn more.

  • Is there a longer video anywhere? Looking closely I have to wonder where the hell did that deer come from? There’s a car up ahead of the Tesla in the same lane, I presume quickly moved back in once it passed the deer? The deer didn’t spook or anything from that car?

This would have been hard for a human driver to avoid hitting, but I know the issue is the right equipment would have been better than human vision, which should be the goal. And it didn’t detect the impact either since it didn’t stop.

But I just think it’s peculiar that that deer just literally popped there without any sign of motion.

  • Steve Rogers: Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?

Tony Stark: Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.

Tony was being snarky, but he’s not wrong about the suit being just an extension. Yes, it’s important to his abilities, otherwise he wouldn’t have needed it from the beginning in the cave. But it’s also not a crutch, as Ironman 3 showed and taught him, and he’s trying to show Peter that it begins with the person.

Also keep in mind what he said to Peter in this same scene - when Peter said he just wanted to be like Tony, Tony comes back and says yeah, and I wanted you to be better. Tony knows that Peter truly doesn’t need the suit because he is that powerful, it’s just once again an extension that enhances those abilities, and if Peter thought it was the suit that made him special he wouldn’t grow.

  • Maybe it’s not the right place for it, but the mentions of AI safety and safety in general don’t pertain to the actual definition of AI safety as used in AI research. No mention of alignment parameters that are needed to be held to. This reads as a “we need to be careful who gets access to this” vs. any warning to AI companies on their direction and haste.
