Error when trying to install Bazzite specifically

I get the following error message:

amd_pstate: failed to register with return -19

And there’s more but then the screen turns into a creepy pasta gif looking thing of white and green shifting blocks, except for a few random letters.

But the issue doesn’t happen when I used a Garuda xfce I had laying around I used for an older PC (that was maybe too old for Bazzite?). That went into the installer and live iso environment without issues.

It’s a newish build I’m making for someone as a gift with the following hardware:

Asus Prime B550M-K AM4 microATX Kingston FURY Beast DDR4 3600 MHz AMD Ryzen 5 4500 AM4

And a used Nvidia RTX 3060ti.

I have secure boot off I think (the Asus EZ bios is weird)

I managed to install it using the text installer, but now it does this:

Then blank screen. Ctrl-Alt-F2 gives me a terminal at least and I did just get-logs which gives me the following:

Is this a Wayland issue?

Not a Wayland issue. But tried installing Fedora Kiinoite to rebase it to Bazzite, but Fedora has the same issue Bazzite did when trying to install, only it doesn’t mention the Elf 19 error, and it frezzes allowing me to take a picture:

I really love Bazzite and run it on my own computer, but I’m starting to think it doesn’t really run on older desktop hardware.

    From my experience Bazzite is the easiest to use system for gaming on Linux, but I can’t install it.

    I tested Garuda, but even the Mokka edition I know my friend won’t like the aesthetic of, and although it works, for some reason on my monitor it only shows 720p resolution - I don’t know why. It even makes the bios go into 720p when it’s otherwise fine. But that could be because I have a 2k monitor.

    I was going to gift them the PC tomorrow since they leave the country for December, so also running out of time. Willing to try other gaming focused systems too that are very beginner friendly (so no arch recommendations I think - and ideally something immutable).

      I think the problem is the insistence on using a gaming-focused OS. Boutique distros can make certain things easier, but they often make unwitting assumptions about hardware that dont actually work for everyone.

      Fedora has probably 10x or more the user base of Bazzite, so there are effectively +/- 10x the variety of of tested builds. Ubuntu/Debian is probably 10x over Fedora, so probably +/- 100x over Bazzite.

      If you want to use Linux with minimal headache, the best advice is to use a mainstream distro with well-tested hardware. If you are building a custom PC you will have the least hassle with 1-2 year old hardware (or older) on Mint or Ubuntu

        I second everything above. If you use Fedora be sure to follow a post install guide, there’s plenty more of them out there. Otherwise, Mint, Ubuntu, and Pop!_OS are great options.

        If you want a little more challenge, EndeavourOS and CachyOS are great introductions to Arch. Avoid Manjaro.

        I’m really sick of everyone suggesting Bazzite non stop. I’m a serial distro hopper because I love learning about various distros as they grow and change, and bazzite and other immutables have always been problematic and janky for me, and their immutability makes it difficult to problem solve with tried and true resources and methods.

        Hard no, with an Nvidia GPU you absolutely should go for a distro like Bazzite to avoid the driver headache.

        This is a BIOS issue anyway, not a distro issue.

          I switched to AMD for my own use a long time ago because of how this used to be the case, so I can’t verify this for myself, but… these days, isn’t that no longer an issue for anyhing newer than Turing? I see RTX 3060 TI in there, which should be fully supported by the open-source drivers that NVIDIA themselves recommend for that hardware, no?

          Again, I could be wrong since I haven’t had direct personal experience with it since the days when I DO know that your statement accurately reflected the NVIDIA GPU + Linux driver situation.

            NVK isn’t yet fully recommendable (otherwise gaming-oriented distros would save themselves all the hassle as well). It mostly works, but the performance often is horrendous. For gaming purposes as well as CUDA you still have to rely on the proprietary driver to get the most performance everywhere, and that thing is as awful to install as ever. It also got some issues on desktop for which distros like Bazzite implement workarounds and sane configurations that are known.

            Nvidia is just awful on Linux…

      Personally, if you want a beginner distro that still is super easy to game on, use Linux mint

      Once you’re more experienced they can switch but for now I recommend sticking with the easy stuff

      Apparently zorin is good too but haven’t personally used it

      The fact that even bios is only 720p makes me think @Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de in the other answer may be on the right track.

      You don’t have an amazing amount of time, so perhaps eliminating variables one by one may make sense before digging through the bios downgrade rabbit hole.

      1. By trying a less bespoke distro it may be possible to eliminate distro doubts quicker. Try mint or fedora, see if they scale correctly in Live mode, and if they do, perhaps also when installed?
      2. otherwise, do you have a different monitor to exclude that variable as well?
      3. if other distros work, it’s unlikely to be a bios issue. If they don’t, which seems likely from the description, then you can follow the firmware discussion and return your efforts to bazzite

      This will take a little more upfront time but may save you some in the long run

        So the bios is only 720p when Garuda is installed.

        I have no clue why.

        It’s otherwise at full resolution.

        I’ll try a different distro like Mint to see if it boots into live (with correct scaling) first
