minus-squaretoynbee@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up3·28 days agoAutistic people can recognize autistic people? Maybe my budding suspicions about myself were wrong.
minus-squarepeopleproblems@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up4·edit-228 days agoYeah. it depends on the visible and vocal characteristics.
minus-squaretoynbee@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up2arrow-down1·28 days agoPlease tell me the visible and vocal characteristics that identify autists? I’d like to know if they apply to me.
minus-squarepeopleproblems@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up5arrow-down1·edit-228 days agoThere are a lot. And they vary in intensity. There’s a couple of screeners out there that you can find, I don’t happen to have a link to them right now. Like one obvious one is hand flapping to specific intense emotions such as excitement or frustration. Another is your ability to understand and use body language. Special Interests. Stimulation seeking or sensory avoidance. Specific patterns of speech. To us, autistic people look normal. Neurotypicals behave in ways that are weird.
minus-squaretoynbee@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up3arrow-down1·28 days agoHand flapping is infuriating to me. It’s the source of one of the biggest arguments I’ve ever had. It feels so dismissive. I have no understanding of body language. Or people. Especially faces. I can’t even be okay without some kind of stimulation, usually music. When I was in therapy, my therapist found this odd. I don’t know what this means, but now I’m a bit sad and worried.
minus-squarepeopleproblems@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up3·28 days agoI’m sorry, the hand flapping? Not everyone does it. It’s just really obvious. And we can’t control it. Not without losing our shit. Bro. Can be ADHD. Bro. Calm. Autism isnt bad it’s just an explanation for things you already know about yourself. Like maybe you need little ouchy stims. Or maybe you need earplugs everywhere to prevent overstimulation. Or maybe a lot of things. Basically you just gotta take care of you so you don’t stress the fuck out living in a neurotypical world.
