Made this to know about the hate. Comment the reason and downvote.
Edit: I thought lemmy would be different and people here will educate one rather than biting. But your downvotes proved that everyone is a dick here too.
The problem there is the immense power and water consumption of data centers and apparently their noise too for the neighborhoods. I have no doubts that AI usage will just grow in the future regardless of that, just like similar concerns never stopped cars, red meat, air conditioners, airplanes, plastic, …you name it…
And tbh: why should I care? Because someone who lives besides a data center has a bit of more noise than usual? It’s a DATACENTER. They do that. Even before LLMs.
And who cares for the environment? We are a destructive, egocentric species that devours this planet. Do you drive cars? Or trains? Do you wear stuff that’s made in horrible conditions, probably by kids working more in a week than you do in a month. And your phone your posting this on? Or the stationary computer?
It’s easy to protest against things I don’t use or want anyway. But that’s hipocracy.
I like LLMs. They’re a nice tool on the tool-belt. If you know how they function and their limitations.
I hope you didn’t procreate, as the human race won’t change because you want it to. I didn’t for that reason.
That would be stressful to live nearby. But I don’t find a reasonable hate for that. I made this post to know the reason.
That’s the point. If you don’t live nearby, is it ethical to support something that causes trouble to other people? It applies to anything, not just AI.
Spoiler: the world does not seem to care much about that and too bad for who is affected. Rarely there are even form of compensations.
As you said, its not just ai. People are affecting by global warming from the vehicle pollution. So everyone is hating cars and drivers now?
The Problem are not the people that care. The problem is the vast majority that doesn’t understand the things they do or use. And it’s always the lowest common denominator everything gets adapted to. Idiocracy was always a documentary not a silly SciFi-flick.
Using ai will make you stupid, at least research seem to indicate so.
It’s unetichally made; on the labour of others.
Oh yea, water and power ofc - proportinally it’s not good to spend that much on asking chatgpt to roleplay a anime gf.
Plus it’s a stereotype. The people I’ve met are usually ignorant of the world, don’t care or think they themselves will make money off “ai”
Oh yea, and it’s lazy. You can figure out stuff or make it on your own.
It’s not even Ai. That’s just misleading marketing. At least for me this is why I hate AI effortless slop.
