April 15 (Reuters) - Nvidia (NVDA.O) on Tuesday said it would take $5.5 billion in charges after the U.S. government limited exports of its H20 artificial intelligence chip to China, a key market for one of its most popular chips.
Nvidia’s AI chips have been a key focus of U.S. export controls as U.S. officials have moved to keep the most advanced chips from being sold to China as the U.S. tries to keep ahead in the AI race. After those controls were implemented, Nvidia began designing chips that would come as close as possible to U.S. limits.
USA buys too much from China compared to how much they export. Restricts exports to China. Truly genius!
Do they honestly believe that China is not capable of producing their own chips for cheaper if Nvidia stops supply? This is moronic
I am not even sure what the US government expects to achieve by limiting them at this point. I could see it being used for negotiating with China on trade, but these guys are inherently not capable of any of that.
This is classic underdevelopment, like how Europe and the US deliberately withheld vital equipment and machinery from Africa to prevent them from building their own industrial base.
It’s obviously way too late for this tactic to make any sense, though. China can’t be underdeveloped, they’re becoming a tech leader at this point.
they’re becoming a tech leader at this point.
they’re not though. they might manufacture for the whole world, but they’re still not the go-to for advanced tech. They’re sure trying to catch up fast though.
If they were to lead anything, it’ll just amount to a bully passing a baton to another bully.
Deepseek, Huawei, Tencent - China isn’t just a factory for the West anymore. They’re not the go-to for advanced tech, but they’ve become a go-to for advanced tech.
I think it’s too late to slow down their growth.
Lmao OK. I was looking at new phones coming out and all the Chinese phones have ultra thin 7000mah silicon carbon batteries that can operate in a wide range of temps while the average western phone has dogshit 4000mah lithium ion that degrades at 30c.
Lol. They still need to sell their products to someone.
But go to China and you’ll see that they have the lead on cars and numerical technologies. They bring to market and adopt faster than anyone else.
They have 17% of the world’s population within their own borders. They have plenty of customers.
There are still huge disparities and not every Chinese citizen is a potential customer.
They still need foreign markets…
Europe has roughly half the population, but pretty much a similar consumer market for instance.
AI bros voted for Trump and got this as a prize. Woohoo, chuds.
