This has become something of a major topic in German news. Apparently many people stored cash of dubious origin there. Furthermore many people did not read the contract properly and didn’t realise that the insurance was capped around 10k Euros.
And specifically not for cash. Only if you adjust the insurance.

Failed to find a source in English for the rest of the fediverse… but there is a small documental series about one of the robbers that may be available in streaming platforms
“Many people told me that out of fear of war and inflation they had moved away from stocks and bank accounts, investing in gold instead. Some said they kept larger sums of cash on hand so they could access it quickly if needed,” he said.
Yes. There are always pros and cons. The “loot boxes” are safe from inflation and bank account limits, but they are exposed thieves just like keeping money in a safe or under the bed at home.
The safest bet is always to invest in society, not in your private treasure chest.
Save from inflation?
They tipped my dead dogs ashes in the bin.

Define victim. For me, the people working at the bank, if anyone, could be called victims. Rarely have I heard of people who have or had deposit boxes whom I would actually sympathize with.
First thing coming to mind would be documents and heirlooms.
More like undeclared currency and collectionism.
Collectionism is when I’m losing at Hungry Hungry Hippos.
I don’t get it, what’s the problem with deposit boxes? Tons of people here have them to mainly store important documents, like birth certificates etc. Basically stuff you don’t want to lose if your house burns down.
Probably: Deposit box -> Bank -> Money -> Rich -> No sympathy
For some people, opinions are apparently formed that easy
I don’t agree with the whole “I hate anyone wealthy” thing that some of the left-wing crowd here has, but at least I can see where people are coming from. But…the bar for having a safe deposit box is pretty low. Depends on the size of the box, but you’re talking maybe $50/year in the US? I mean, okay, sure, “wealthy” is something of an arbitrary line, but that’s a…pretty low wealth bar for hating people. I just grabbed a pizza last night, and it was something like $25.
Guess you’re getting eaten along with the rest of the rich when the time comes 😁
